Terminology
The following terms are used throughout this guide:
- Workflow — a graphical representation of the flow of information (documents and/or forms) through an enterprise.
- Process — all items necessary for the function of a workflow. This can include the workflow itself, documents and forms, and other supporting structures and definitions.
- Node — a single step in a workflow. For example, a node could be a task assigned to a user, the sending of a notification, the setting of a value, or many other elements.
- Swimlane — a functional role within a workflow. For example, a swimlane could represent a functional manager role or a team role.
- Participant — a person assigned to a swimlane in a workflow.
- Originator — the person who initiates a workflow. Every workflow must have an Originator swimlane.
- Process Owner — the person who is responsible for all processes in a specified group. Every workflow must have a Process Owner. By default, the Originator is the Process Owner, but you can assign a different Process Owner as needed.
